One of the hardest decisions about building or remodeling a home is deciding on the type of flooring you want. There are so many different styles to choose from, especially since the construction and design fields have grown. People are also confused about what the difference is between hardwood floors and engineered floors. Is one more of an advantage than the other? Are they interchangeable? We’ve assembled some of the main difference between the two to help you better decide on your flooring options.
Hardwood floors are typically made of planks milled from a single piece of timber. They are more traditional as they were originally used for structural purposes, such as being installed perpendicular to wooden support beams called joists or bearers. As more contractors started using cheaper materials, such as concrete, engineered wood flooring has become more popular.
One of the advantages to hardwood floors is durability. Solid hardwood floors have a thicker wear surface, and any damage to it can be sanded and finished. It’s also about ¾ of an inch thick and can be installed on floors that won’t experience significant amounts of moisture. It expands and contracts in reaction to changes in humidity and temperature, so it is only recommended for rooms at ground level or above. It also provides better indoor air quality because it doesn’t encourage mold growth or dust mite infestations.
Engineered hardwood is flooring composed of two or more layers of wood that forms a plank. The top layer is made of hardwood veneer that is visible when the floor is installed and is adhered to a core, which is made of hardwood or plywood. The top layer can also be styled in many different ways. Engineered hardwood is more resilient to moisture and heat, so it could be installed in a basement or bathroom without fear of warping. Its construction allows it to avoid buckling or reacting to fluctuations in humidity and temperature.
Engineered hardwood is also easier to install, even if you do it yourself. Certain types come with particular systems that allow people to fit the boards together more easily. Engineered hardwood can also be refinished, although much less often than solid hardwood.
Both kinds of floors can be easy to maintain and add a warmth to the rooms in your home.
